BVAA re-elected its officers for the coming year: Hazel Compton
(Virginia), President; Dora Gabe (Texas), Vice President; Joan
Langworthy (North Carolina), Secretary; Mary McKenzie (Tennessee),
Treasurer; and Joyce Thornton (Florida), Reporter.
The Auxiliary was once again able to provide four scholarships.
This year, however, the Silent Auction did not produce as great
a profit as in previous years. The Auxiliary room at the national
convention was located in an area that was not easily accessible
for drop-in customers. The donations for the auctions were also
down.
BVAA will continue its important mission of providing scholarships
to wives and children of blinded veterans. Many Auxiliary members
stood up and pledged donations to make up the deficit so that
scholarships would not be reduced in number. Let us hope that
next year the donations will return to their former level and
that the location of the Auxiliary room will be more accessible
to convention visitors.
The Florida BVAA returned home to face the destruction and subsequent
cleanup resulting from Hurricane Charley. The storm affected the
west coast of Florida, causing extensive destruction of property
and loss of power for several days. Things are nevertheless getting
back to normal. The west coast of Florida is grateful for the
volunteer assistance that came from several states. The Federal
Emergency Management Agency has also assisted Floridians with
food, repairs, and financial help.
BVAA of Florida will now turn its attention to the BVA 60th National
Convention in Miami Beach!
