Unveiled Stamps Honor Veterans
Two new United States Postal Service first-class stamps honoring
veterans were recently unveiled in ceremonies throughout the country.
The Purple Heart 37-cent stamp was issued May 30 and celebrated
with a ceremony at George Washingtons Mount Vernon Estate
and Gardens. Subsequent ceremonies occurred at various VA medical
centers in the months of June and July.
The stamp depicts the Purple Heart medallion, which is made of
heart-shaped metal, rimmed in gold, and suspended from a purple
and white ribbon. In the center of the rich purple heart is a
bust of George Washington.
The Korean War Commemoration Stamp was first seen on July 27
at the Korean War Veterans Memorial as part of the armistice ceremony
and wreath laying at the memorial. It features a photo of the
Korean War Veterans Memorial in a winter setting, symbolizing
the harsh winters endured by those who represented the 22 nations
under the United Nations Command in Korea. The stamp went on sale
nationwide on July 28.
