Phone Number Correction

The May-June 2003 issue of the BVA Bulletin provided information about a project entitled "A Disability and Rehabilitation Research Project on Persons Aging with Hearing and Vision Loss."

The project, based at the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Blindness and Low Vision at Mississippi State University, seeks to improve employment and community integration outcomes for persons who are blind or deaf and who are experiencing a secondary onset of vision or hearing loss resulting from aging.

Unfortunately, an incorrect toll free number was given for those interested in calling Mrs. B.J. LeJeune for more information about participating in the project as volunteers. The correct number is 800-675-7782, one digit different from what was erroneously provided previously. Prospective volunteers may also call 662-325-2001, which is also a different number from what appeared in the past issue.

The Bulletin deeply regrets the error and the inconvenience it caused to both the callers and the unintended recipients of the calls.

KWSM Still Available

Veterans who served in Korea, its territorial waters, or its airspace between June 25, 1950 and July 27, 1953 are still eligible to receive the Republic of Korea War Service Medal (KWSM).

Service must have been performed while on permanent assignment in Korea, while on temporary duty in Korea for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days, or while as a crew member of aircraft in aerial flight over Korea participating in/supporting actual combat operations. Veterans serving in Japan, Guam, the Philippines, or other countries during that time period are not eligible.

If the veteran is deceased, his/her primary next of kin may apply for the KWSM (spouse, children, or siblings, in that order of precedence). The application consists of a Veteran Request Form and a supporting document. There is no charge to apply for the medal, and no money should be sent with the application or supporting documents.

Veterans and their families may call Stuart Nelson at BVA National Headquarters (800-669-7079) for more information about the required supporting documents, or to request a copy of the Veteran Request Form.
