Perhaps unknown to many BVA members is that Thursday, August 13, 1981 was National Blinded Veterans Recognition Day, resulting from an official proclamation by President Ronald Reagan.
The proclamation coincided with both the BVA 36th National Convention in Washington, DC and the release by the U.S. Postal Service of three different versions of a stamped envelope overprinted with Braille, on top of which appeared the admonition, “Remember the Blinded Veteran.”
A replica of the stamped portion of the envelope, pictured here, is displayed at BVA National Headquarters. A policy change by the Postal Service made the BVA stamp of 25 years ago the last one ever issued in recognition of a single VSO.
