New Resource on Macular Degeneration
The Alliance for Aging Research has recently compiled a wealth
of information and resources about age-related Macular Degeneration.
The effort is part of a campaign to assist medical care practitioners,
patients, caregivers, and the general public.
According to Katie McFadden, Director of Health Programs for
the Alliance, the information has been sent to optometrists and
ophthalmologists throughout the country. It is available online
at www.agingresearch.org
(click on the AMD
Health Corner).
"The more people we reach, the more effective our efforts
will be to equip people with the knowledge they need about age-related
Macular Degeneration," she said.
The resource material includes information about the causes,
diagnosis, stages, and treatments of the disease. It also provides
details on rehabilitation, financial assistance, support groups,
research, and employment options.
Age-related Macular Degeneration causes vision loss in the central
field of vision and is one of the leading causes of lost independence
for people over the age of 60.
VA Center Named for Sonny Montgomery
Secretary Principi hosted former Representative G.V. "Sonny"
Montgomery in a ceremonial grand opening of a newly renovated
auditorium named in his honor. Tom Miller represented BVA at the
event.
The 15-term Mississippi Congressman championed veterans
causes on Capitol Hill until his retirement in 1997, making possible
many of the benefits and programs available to veterans today.
The ceremony included presentation of a video expressing thanks
to Montgomery, remarks by both Principi and the former Congressman,
and a ribbon cutting.
Fisher House Recognized
VA honored the Fisher House Foundation in a special ceremony
November 12 for its unique service to veterans and their families.
Tom Miller and other VSO leaders attended the event.
Fisher House provides free lodging to families of veterans who
receive medical treatment at VA or military health care facilities.
There are now 32 houses worldwide, each between 5,000 and 8,000
square feet. The homes feature kitchens, laundry facilities, a
dining room, and sleeping rooms for up to 22 families. The Fisher
House program, started in 1990 by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher,
serves more than 7,000 families annually.
