Association Supports Art Awareness Week
BVA was one of 70 organizations that recently put its stamp of
approval on the Second Annual Art Beyond Sight Awareness Week,
October 11-25.
The objective of the now annual campaign, organized by Art Education
for the Blind (headquarters in New York City), is to raise public
awareness of the need for and benefits of art to children and
adults affected by sight loss. Its attainment is made possible
by linking together sighted and blind people, museums, schools,
and libraries around the world.
"Many people believe erroneously that art is primarily a
matter of visual appreciation," said Dr. Marc Maurer, President
of the National Federation of the Blind.
Recent cognitive research has demonstrated that blind individuals
are capable of understanding and representing concepts and images
that are commonly perceived as purely visual. The research also
reveals that art experiences are meaningful and life-enriching
for all people, including those with visual impairments.
BVA was listed as an endorser of Art Beyond Sight Awareness Week
on posters and brochures about the campaign. For more information
about the week or for resources about blindness in general, go

Editor Seeks Regional News
The BVA Bulletin is continually searching for stories and information
on activities occurring in the BVA community at regional group
levels. Of particular interest are events involving blinded veterans
serving other veterans, members of BVA with unique qualities or
achievements, and regional group social gatherings associated
with national holidays such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Flag
Day, and Independence Day.
Stories or story ideas can be sent to BVA National Headquarters
(Attn: Bulletin editor) or via email to snelson@bva.org.
Accompanying photos should be in electronic format (tif. files
or high-resolution jpeg. files preferred) or printed on paper
with a high gloss finish.
Note to Readers
All blinded veterans for whom BVA has a record in its database
are eligible to receive a complimentary print copy of the Bulletin.
BVA also mails the publication to the spouses of deceased members
who have previously indicated an interest in receiving it. The
audiocassette version is sent to Association members only.
Recipients of the print and/or audiocassette versions who wish
to be deleted from one of the categories should contact Membership
Manager Alyson Alt at 202-371-8880, or via email address aalt@bva.org.
60th Convention Reminder
If they havent already done so, blinded veterans and their
families should mark August 16-20 on their new 2005 calendars
in preparation for a week-long stay at the Wyndham Hotel in Miami
Beach, Florida. The occasion will mark the 60th anniversary of
the formal 1945 meeting at Avon Old Farms, Connecticut, that organized
BVA and carved out a path to its future.
Details about next years gathering will be included in the
next two issues of the Bulletin.
