Illinois Honors Gary Schultz

Illinois Regional Group President Johnny E. Williams presented a plaque of appreciation to retiring Hines Orientation and Mobility Specialist Gary Schultz on October 30. The presentation occurred at a retirement party for Schultz attended by many of his friends and co-workers at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Wheaton, Illinois.

"Gary completed more than 32 years of compassionate service to blind and visually impaired veterans," said Johnny. "He will be greatly missed at Hines."

Schultz is a Vietnam War veteran, having been drafted into the Army on August 15, 1968. He served approximately 19 months of active duty, a year of which was in the infantry in Vietnam. Shortly after his discharge, he enrolled at Western Michigan University and received a Master’s Degree in Orientation and Mobility.

During his career, Schultz was an O&M Specialist at West Haven, at Hines, and at Birmingham. He also spent four years as a VIST Coordinator in West Virginia. While at Hines, Schultz completed training with electronic travel aids and cross training in the visual skills department.

TEE Tournament Recognizes Pyle

Ohio Regional Group Secretary George Pyle received the Wayne Earl/Hampton Hill Award at the 11th annual TEE (Training, Exposure, Experience) Tournament.

The award, presented to George at the TEE awards banquet on September 9, is given each year to the participant who best reflects the true nature and spirit of the event. George was recognized in particular for his exceptional work and contributions as a member of the TEE fund raising committee during the past year.

The TEE Tournament is held annually in Iowa City, Iowa, for veterans who are legally blind. It is designed to provide opportunities for skill development and increased self-esteem. The program uses a clinic format to promote rehabilitation, fellowship, and camaraderie among participants. This year’s event was sponsored by the VA General Post Fund, the Iowa City VA Medical Center, the United States Golf Association, and a number of local VSO chapters, corporations, and individuals.
