The Auxiliary's View... Pam Hogan

by Pam Hogan

Greetings to all our blinded veterans and their families. The year is passing us by so quickly that it almost seems like a blur already. Soon we will be planning our national convention, scheduled for Louisville, Kentucky, August 17-21.

Several of our Auxiliary regional groups have been busy with projects that benefit our blinded veterans and their families. Please do not forget to log your hours for both BVA and BVAA when you volunteer at VA facilities. We receive credit on a national basis for the numerous hours our volunteers devote to service so please do count every hour.

As we see new blinded veterans join the BVA ranks, let us not forget to recruit their families and friends into the Auxiliary. A great example of looking outward for new Auxiliary members comes from the Orange County Chapter #101 of the Southern California Regional Group. This chapter has located many willing and supportive members through their association with the Orange County Center of the Braille Institute. Please look beyond the obvious—there are many out there who are ready to assist our blinded veterans.

BVAA will award three higher education scholarships for the 2015-16 academic years. There will be two scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each and one in the amount of $1,000 awarded to the children or spouses of blinded veterans, regardless of whether the blindness is service connected. The awards are made in two installments, August and December, to the institution in which the student is enrolled. Funds can be used for tuition, books, and fees only. Please see www.bvaaux.org for additional information and instructions on how to apply. Completed materials can be sent to Chairperson Lottie Davis, 615 South Adams Street, Arlington, VA by May 1, 2015.

We are hoping to publish our newsletter soon and are anxious to hear from both our BVA regional groups and their respective auxiliaries on the great things they are doing. Please send ideas, items of interest, articles, and even photos to me, Pam Hogan, at WoodNRoses@aol.com, or to 27601 North Bernina Avenue, Canyon Country, CA 91351.
