The Auxiliary's View...

by Darian Slayton Fleming

BVAA regional group presidents should have received a note containing an inquiry about our recently instituted quarterly conference calls. Specifically, we wished to know if the calls had been useful and if our officers found them useful.

Some reported that they wished the calls had been possible previously. Others reported their usefulness since it is difficult to physically get members to meetings. Still others reported about their individual regional group activities.

The purpose of these calls is to share ideas in order to network and provide encouragement to regional groups and their officers. Our most recent call on April 22 will be followed up with one more conference prior to the BVA 67th National Convention. Look for an announcement in the BVAA Star, BVAA E-Star, and the Summer 2012 Bulletin. The call-in number of 760-569-0100 and participant access code of 395187# should remain the same.

What do we do to stay connected with one another and with our veterans? Some Auxiliary groups hold an annual lunch. Others perform community service projects. Some groups hold their meetings simultaneously with those of the veterans.

Leading up to March, for example, we in Oregon had noticed that the Oregon Columbia Regional Group attendance had dwindled. Consequently, we attempted as a BVAA group to organize a meeting in conjunction with a social luncheon.

The venture was a success and it was wonderful to see one another! Our meeting attendees consisted of both new officers and new faces. New members joined both the BVA regional group and the BVAA group. Who out there can claim that business cannot be mixed with pleasure?

We are beginning to plan our BVAA program for the upcoming national convention. Elections will be held so begin thinking about running for an office or talking with those you may wish to nominate. Our Silent Auction is always a hit. To top it all off, the cookbooks will be available again too.

By popular demand, an interactive discussion about helping ourselves while helping our veterans will take place again this year. If you have topics or questions you would like included in this forum, please send them to me, Darian Slayton Fleming, at or BVAA National President Patricia Hail at
