At Arlington National Cemetery, both men and horses train constantly for funeral duty. They are members of the Caisson Platoon of the Third United States Infantry (The Old Guard), based at nearby Ft. Myer.
While horses are most certainly a thing of the past in standard military operations, their role in military ceremony and tradition remains profoundly important.
The horses perform at Arlington Cemetery funerals. Their presence outside Memorial Amphitheater prior to the Veterans Day National Observance reflects reverence and respect for all fallen service members.
