The Auxiliary's View...

by Peter Davis

The purpose of the BVA Auxiliary is three-fold: to aid BVA in whatever fashion we are able; to develop a deeper interest in the Blinded Veterans Association among family members and friends of blinded veterans; and to preserve and strengthen a spirit of fellowship within both BVA and BVAA.

We approach our upcoming annual meetings with this mission and purpose in mind. As always, the meetings will take place in conjunction with the BVA 63rd National Convention. As stated in our bylaws, all of the present officers are up for re-election again this year.

We will again conduct the Silent Auction to raise funds in support of our scholarship fund. If you have not yet sent your items, now is definitely the time to do so. Send them to Faye Duvall at 4053 West Gardenia Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85051. All donations are final (non-returnable) and become the property of BVAA. If you wish, you can lug your items to Phoenix with you, but why not send them now and save that space in your suitcase?

In addition to the working components of the convention, we will gather for lunch as a group on August 13 (Wednesday) and then attend all of the main events together: President’s Reception, Father Carroll Luncheon, and the Awards Banquet. Please add to your agenda some visits to sites in downtown Phoenix, meeting with old friends, the making of new friends, the sharing of stories about the past year, and keeping company with Sam Ayoob as he labors in the hospitality suite to help us all have a great time!

I also urge Auxiliary members to spend time in the convention Exhibit Hall with the displays of adaptive items intended to improve the blinded veteran’s quality of life. Please support the convention effort by expressing thanks to the exhibitors for attending and for sharing their insights into the latest technological advancements.

If you haven’t signed up a new member yet, be sure to do it before leaving for Phoenix. Membership is easy and inexpensive ($10). Dues help defray the cost of running our Auxiliary nationally. Additional information about membership is available from Ann Case, 4905 Round Rock Drive, El Paso, TX 79924, 915-881-4371.

Recipes for the upcoming BVAA cookbook (another fundraiser) can be sent to Barbara Stocking at 3801 Coco Grove Avenue, Miami, FL  33133 or brought to Phoenix with you. Everyone should have favorite recipes. Won’t you share them with your Auxiliary family?

As I close out this year as your reporter, I express my thanks to each of you for your support. See you in Phoenix!
