The Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) is an organization of blinded veterans helping blinded veterans. Through our service programs, regional groups, resources, and advocacy before the legislative and executive branches of government, we hope to make life better for blinded veterans.

 

BVA is currently has an immediate opening for a part-time, Social Media & Website Specialist located at the BVA Headquarters in Alexandria, VA. Resume and cover letter must be received by July 15, 2018.

 

Acting under the general supervision of the Director of Public Affairs, the Social Media & Website Specialist is responsible for:

 

  • ·         Generating, editing, publishing and sharing daily content (original text, images, video or HTML) that educates, advocates and builds meaningful connections across all social media platforms.
  • ·         Composing and distributing monthly emails to BVA’s email lists.
  • ·         Distribute fundraising emails, using copy from BVA’s Development Team.
  • ·         Assist in producing, editing and uploading video and podcasts to various appropriate media platforms.
  • ·         Serve as the webmaster for the BVA website
  • ·         Coordinate with BVA IT consultants on changes or improvements to the website’s code.
  • ·         Upload the bi-monthly BVA Bulletin and news stories as needed to the website. 
  • ·         Other responsibilities include researching and proofreading materials for public education campaigns and other administrative duties as needed.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • ·         College Degree (AA or higher), in IT, Communications, or Computer Science.
  • ·         Previous work experience in communications, public relations, social media, and online platforms preferred.
  • ·         If the candidate is legally blind, he or she must have attended and successfully completed a rehabilitation training program at one of the Department of Veterans Affairs Blind Rehabilitation Centers.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ·         College Degree (BA or higher), in IT, Communications, or Computer Science
  • ·         5 years’ work experience in communications, public relations, social media, and online platforms.
  • ·         Be a Veteran of U.S. Military Service with a discharge, time-in-service or medical retirement characterized on a DD-214 as Honorable with a V.A. disability rating of 30% or higher or be a dependent of a Veteran of U.S. Military Service with a discharge, time-in-service or medical retirement characterized on a DD-214 as Honorable with a V.A. disability rating of 30% or higher.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

           

Knowledge:

  • ·         Knowledge of social media trends, changes, and best practices
  • ·         Knowledge of social media and website compliance with accessibility software

 

Skills:

  • ·         Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • ·         Proficiency in braille, JAWS, low vision aids and the use of special aids and job-related equipment for the blind and visually impaired (if blind or visually impaired)
  • ·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • ·         Proficiency in managing social media pages and websites
  • ·         Proficiency in uploading various media formats to social media platforms
  • ·         Proficiency in HTML coding and website or graphic design
  • ·         Excellent oral communication skills
  • ·         Proficiency in video/audio editing
  • ·         Basic photo editing skills
  • ·         Proficiency in Adobe CC

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.      ONLINE CORRESPONDENCE & PUBLIC RELATIONS

 

·         Manage and monitor web-based resources to promote BVA’s message & programs through websites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and monthly email campaign

·         Monitor BVA’s online reputation on sites such as Facebook, Charity Navigator, and Great Nonprofits, and respond to criticism as necessary

·         Respond to questions asked on social media platforms

·         Create YouTube compatible video of BVA publications

·         Create, post, and share various visual and audio media to social media and email

·         Monitor social media platforms for trends and issues important to the BVA mission, members, and all blinded veterans

 

2.      WEBSITE MANAGEMENT

 

·         Manage BVA’s website, making updates and changes as-needed

·         Work with IT consultants to improve and expand BVA’s website

 

ADDITIONAL duties

 

·         Reviewing, editing, and launching BVA podcasts

·         Attending BVA media committee meetings

·         Creating crystal reports for membership department

·         Maintain BVA’s BBB status (once every two years)

·         Creating reports for BVA staff/contractors

·         Basic hardware troubleshooting

·         Other duties as directed

 

 

Job Type:         Part-time position working 22.5 hours per week.

 

Salary:             $17.50 per hour

 

Hours:             The Social Media and Web Specialist will negotiate on working either 5 partial days, 3 7.5-hour days or some combination that equates to 22.5 hours per week of normal work day hours.
